Handmade Monday - Fabric box

Good morning! My contribution to Handmade Monday today is not going to win any prizes for the most ooooh, ahhhh fabric, although as you know I think hessian is pretty wonderful. Also, for this particular little project I wanted a neutral setting as I wanted my wool to do the singing - does that make sense?

After carting my teetering piles of Granny squares around on Friday in order to take a picture to show the progress of my blanket, dropping them twice, cursing countless times, (you must understand that they are all held in a certain colour sequence for ease of reference for me, I am quite fastidious about this!) I decided I must take matters into hand and make them a proper little home......

.......thus making it easier to transport them and provide a cosy home for squares and balls of wool (or yarn? When did we start calling wool yarn?), which can sit at my feet while I work.

I'm  afraid there's no tutorial today, as time has run away with me, but I can tell you, I measured carefully the size of the box I wanted, (length, width, height), prepared a paper pattern and cut out 4 pieces, one of each of.....

........hessian, lining, interfacing and interlining. Then I sewed them all up at the corners. But it was too floppy for my liking so I added French seams at each corner which seemed to do the trick and provided the soft rigidness that I was after.

Now I really must schedule in some Christmas time this week. I have been diligently trying to ignore it in favour of other sewing projects but it's no use, there are lists to be prepared, cards to make, outings to arrange and a Christmas Cake to bake.

OH came home with this last week, "I bought you this" he declared. So I'll be giving it a go, apologies to all you brilliant bakers out there who may view this as a little bit of a cop out, but I'll try anything once.

And I also read with interest  this post from Craft Blog UK referring to the 'About Me' section of your web page, and decided yes, mine was as dull as dish water, so I've had a bit of a revamp.

And now you know what I'm going to say don't you.......? Well it is the best way to start your week, by paying a visit to Wendy and the wonderful crafters that make up Handmade Monday. This week Wendy has solved a mystery!

  1. What a great idea - many thanks for sharing. It looks ideal for my cards when I display them on tables, so think I might give this ago. Must admit I am feeling very tempted by Delia's cake in a box.

  2. Lovely idea. Must do something like that as my storage is appalling. I see you're doing a Delia Christmas cake. We always make the Delia version, but feed it with plenty of alcohol every week. speaking of which I must do that now...

  5. What a lovely post full of lovely things! I love your box and your blanket. I'm trying out the Mary Berry Christmas cake so perhaps we could all compare notes at the finish!

  6. The Christmas cake is really good, my sister used the pack a few weeks ago and said that the best thing is not having to do the fiddly measuring out as it is all done for you. How super is that?

BTW those piles of granny squares appear to be growing rather quickly... how much longer do you reckon?

  8. You've been busy and I'm envious of your progress with your blanket. Mine won't see this Christmas - maybe next year! Just love your cosies and wrapping ideas from your previous post - and of course the basket for your wool!

  9. Great idea to make a box for your blanket stuff. (I know what you mean about dropping the crochet squares) I like Hessian - it reminds me of a bag I made in school (all those years ago!) Mich x

  11. Love it - and I'm a big fan of hessian too.

I remember being told (fartoo many years ago to own up to!) that it should only be called wool if it actually came from a sheep!

  14. I think these fabric boxes are a great idea. Wouldn't really know where to start to make one, but doesn't stop me wanting one :) Plus that would mean I would have to start getting more organised and that scares me lol.

  15. I would make one addition to your box - a handle, I never seem to be allowed to work in the same place twice.
I attempted a Christmas cake once, and I think it shall remain as once only!

  17. Nice 'tidy all'. Envious of your red/white crochet squares, (how I wish I could crochet). Good link to craft blog article ... certainly makes you think. Need to revamp mine before considering linking though.

  18. I really like hessian so it would be my fabric of choice for this gorgeous box too especially lined in cream. I foresee you will have a very happy two hour Downton special this Christmas, with your crocheted rug tucked round you and sherry in hand! Vx

  19. I like your little box. After Christmas I swear I am going to go back thru all of these wonderful ideas and put some of them to the test! :) As for the about me yes, I think they might all be more interesting and they ARE hard to write. But I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the regulars on Handmade Monday by reading what you do every week. I feel as if you are all becoming real people to me, bit by bit. :)
