Handmade Monday - Raw edge applique

Well I finally got myself organised enough to take part in Handmade Monday at 1st Unique gifts. Why not give it a whirl, it's run by a lady called Wendy who is keen to bring together like minded individuals like our good selves with a passion for all things hand made. There is some amazing talent out there.

So any way, I set myself a challenge of making something to fit a picture frame which I was fortunate enough to receive from a lovely friend for my last birthday. Out came the scraps of fabric, on went Radio 4, and a fresh pot of coffee was brewing. I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying making pictures with scraps of fabric, and I know I've said it before but my embroidery foot really is my pride and joy. I had so much fun playing around for a couple of hours, drawing and tracing, snipping and cutting, placing and stitching fabric. Here's a sneaky peek of what I came up with.

and finally........

I then had the task of fitting it to the frame.

The picture is destined for a shelf in my kitchen which as of yet hasn't actually been put up, but there's nothing like a bit of vision and forward planning is there? Hope you're having fun with your scraps and needles.

  3. Oh how lovely - just my cup of tea (sorry!!). I have had visions of doing something like this for a while - I learned free machining back in 1978 and need to get back to it. It's all paintbrushes at the moment but there's a cup of tea on my latest blog post too!
Thanks so much for taking part in HM - lovely to have you join in x

  4. Caroline - that applique is super and very on trend at the moment - it is really reminiscent of the work of Poppy Treffrey who is really riding high at the moment. Great to see you on HM Monday

  5. Oh, I really like this, I am going to have to find a tutorial! I used to do crewel work, before my kids were into everything. I should pick up needlework again (no excuse, they are all in their thirties!) This is very inspirational, thank you!

  12. Oh I just love raw edged applique and have tried so many times. Everyone else's looks amazing but mine always looks like a cat has been sat at the sewing machine rather than a perfectly capable human being! You have inspired me to have another go at it x
