Dad has a sort out!

Now, when mum said 'Your dad's sorting out the loft'  it set my mind thinking. 'The loft' was hallowed ground when I was growing up, no one was allowed in, only dad and I used to wonder what hidden treasures lay up there.

And dad... well he is definitely a hoarder, never wanting to throw anything away because "You never know when it might come in useful." His approach to pieces of wood and bits of metal is probably the same as
mine is to fabric, on no account chuck it, a use can always be found for it. Poor Mum!

So anyway the great 'sorting out of the loft' is still on going but I thought you might like to see some of the treasures so far uncovered, which Mum and Dad brought down with them this week and believe you me I thought all my Christmasses had come at once......

First of all memories.

Some of you may remember wrestling with binca and a sewing needle at primary school. When I saw these I was transported back to 'Friday afternoon Needlework Club' with Mrs Old, some time in the 1970's. These were my attempts, I guess I must have been about 8 or 9.

First attempt at a sampler.......

Feeling a little bit braver.......

Check out the herringbone!!

First attempt at applique

Garish colour scheme!!

And now onto some fun items. This is when you realise that no one knows you like your parents do.

Mum's precious books!!!!

Thanks Mum!

......and patterns

Lots of fabric......

and buttons......

.......and a little box full of bobbins, spool pins and needle threaders.....

and....... big squeal, this big beast.

Thanks Mum and Dad

There was also a huge box of picture frames screaming out for some paint and some of my old school work which I'm going to choose my moment to share with the boys. So many projects, I was mad on making little project books.

So SSSHHHH don't tell OH but these beauties are now hidden safely away in my loft, ready for their next big adventure and of course I need to clear the decks for any more goodies my mum or dad may find.

Now, before I go I must tell you about a great giveaway that Cathy is having over at Potter Jotter, if you want to find out more you'll have to pop over for a little look.

And finally on this special day, a moment to reflect.......

Good weekend x

  1. Oooh I dream of finds like this! Lucky you. I do remeber binca and needles very well, and not in a good way! Unfortunately my mum throws everything out, so no memorabilia in her loft.

  2. How many treasures!! Oh I bet you were in heaven! So many memories for you... I remember doing similar samplers in primary school too, I wonder if my parents have kept them in their loft? xx

  3. I am with you all the way on this one. Recently had an attic conversion done and had to redistribute all the keepsakes stored away to respective offspring receiving comments like "You never kept that all these years Mom" and "Crikey, I had forgotten that one" but overall I think it gave three grown up kids a lot of pleasure just like you. I might also add a few of the Grands had a good laugh too at some of the stuff.

  6. I can feel another issue coming on though - I sat with my 70 yr old neighbour the other day discussing how needlework was no longer taught at school.

  7. I have my binca mats too! I want to sit on the sofa reading your copies of Schoolfriend and Girl's Crystal... and fabric too. Am sitting here pea green with envy, you lucky, lucky girl :)

  8. Your comments had me smiling ladies, thank you, and Frances (Polly. P) you've hit a raw nerve with me there too. Why isn't it taught! I'm afraid it's probably due to the over crowded curriculum, thus sewing just gets pushed further and further down the list.

  9. Hello Caroline,
Just popped in to see what you have been up to and heavens those cross stitch pictures brought back memories but I am afraid it was in the 60s for me! I never knew that stuff was called binca but like you I can remember sitting in class making little samplers just like yours. You have come on a bit more than me since then though! :-)
